Where was the Etruscan city of Tarquinia located?

The Etruscan city of Tarquinia was located on the plateau of the Civita, near the present-day town of Tarquinia, in Lazio, north of Rome. It overlooked the hinterland about 6 km from the Tyrrhenian coast. The modern town, formerly called Corneto, therefore does not occupy exactly the same site as the ancient city.

The great Etruscan necropolis of the Monterozzi, known for its painted tombs, is located on another plateau, near the Civita. It is mainly this necropolis that you can visit today; the remains of the ancient settlement on the Civita are less immediately legible. To situate the place, Tarquinia is in the province of Viterbo, about 90 to 100 km northwest of Rome. The ancient city, its archaeological site and the present-day town are sometimes confused, although they correspond to neighbouring but distinct places.

The name "Tarquinia" unfolds into several nearby landmarks: this small shift between the town, the city and the necropolis makes the history far more intriguing than a simple dot on the map.
