Is Capalbio worth visiting?

Yes, Capalbio worth a visit if you like small medieval hill towns and quiet strolls, but the village is compact: don't plan a whole day for it alone. Allow about 1 to 2 hours to wander the narrow streets, see the ramparts and the Rocca Aldobrandesca, then enjoy the panoramic view over the Maremma countryside. The atmosphere is polished, sometimes a bit upscale, and there are few monuments to visit inside. You can find the practical details in my guide to Capalbio.

The detour becomes more interesting if you combine the village with the Giardino dei Tarocchi, a few minutes away by car: this sculpture park by Niki de Saint Phalle takes about 1 h 30 to 2 hours. It generally opens from 1st April to October 15 ; the adult ticket costs 15 € and it's better to book online, as entries are limited. Keep in mind that the hilltop village and the beaches are not in the same place: to reach the coast, you'll have to get back in the car. If you have lunch there, here are also my picks among the restaurants of Capalbio.

The contrast between Capalbio's very chic side and the unbridled fancifulness of the Giardino dei Tarocchi is what makes the detour truly unique.
