How to get an Italian eSIM?

To use an eSIM in Italy, first check that your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked, then buy an Italy plan from an operator or a travel eSIM seller. Most of these plans are data-only : you keep your usual number for calls and texts, but you won't necessarily get an Italian number. As a guide, some travel plans cost around 10 to 20 € for a few gigabytes and a duration of 10 to 30 days ; compare the amount of data, the duration and the network used before paying.

After the purchase, install the eSIM by scanning the QR code or following the app instructions, ideally over Wi-Fi, before you leave. In the "Cellular Data" or "Mobile Network" settings, select the eSIM for data; enable data roaming if the seller asks for it. Check when the validity starts: sometimes at installation, sometimes at the first connection in Italy. Keep your usual SIM active if you want to receive texts, but disable its data abroad to avoid roaming charges. If you want an Italian number or more call options, look at local offers: the purchase may require an ID and take more time. In Maremma, the signal can vary outside cities; check the partner network if you plan to travel a lot in rural areas.

A smart little habit before heading off to explore Maremma: download your maps offline, so you don't end up negotiating with a roundabout with no signal.
