The Maremmano sheepdog can be gentle and protective with children it knows, but it is not a dog that should be allowed to approach without caution. Its role is to guard a flock: it may therefore be wary of strangers and react if it believes a child is threatening the animals or getting too agitated near it. Temperament also depends on the dog and its socialization.
If you come across one near a flock in Maremma, don't assume it is available for a pet, even if it seems calm. Keep children close to you, don't let them run toward the dog or approach the sheep, and don't try to feed it or touch it. Go around the flock quietly if you can; if the dog approaches or blocks the way, stop and follow the shepherd's instructions rather than forcing your way through. With a known family dog, the encounter can be quite different, but adult supervision remains necessary, especially with little ones.
