How to tell an authentic agriturismo from a hotel in Maremma?

An authentic agriturismo is distinguished first of all by an active farm operation : in Tuscany, the farming activity must remain the main one, with the accommodation tied to it. Check that the establishment clearly explains what is grown or raised there, and not just that it is "in the countryside". Land, olive trees, vines or animals are good signs, but ask whether the produce really comes from the farm. Homemade or estate products at breakfast, for sale or at meals are a good sign; the mere word "local" is not enough. A pool or comfortable rooms do not make it a hotel: an agriturismo can offer both.

En Maremma, the estates can be far from villages and beaches: check the distance by road, the travel time and whether a car is necessary. Don't necessarily expect hotel services: a permanent reception desk, a restaurant open every evening or daily cleaning may not be included. Have the schedules, the services and what is included in the price confirmed before paying.

A successful agriturismo is less a room with a view than a door left ajar onto the daily life of the estate — and in Maremma, that small difference gives the whole stay its flavour.
