The verdict
Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo and Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro neck and neck
7,5 versus 7,3: the gap is too small to separate them on the overall rating. The choice comes down to the criteria that matter to you, below.
Choose Toscana IGT Rosso – Il Borro if…
- you prioritise reconnaissance (8,2 vs 7,2) : Three bicchieri, three stelle Veronelli, four viti and several 90 points (Suckling, Parker, Wine Spectator): numerous and named distinctions.
- you care about syrah: the only listing in the head-to-head to mention it
- your budget matters: from €48 / btl, the lowest price in the head-to-head
Its weak point in this head-to-head: rapport qualité/prix (6,6). €47.79 for a Toscana IGT with a Bordeaux-style blend, even with a crossed-out price of €52.20 and distinctions: expensive for what is described.
Choose Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC – Petrolo if…
- you prioritise rapport qualité/prix (7,4 vs 6,6) : Large 1.5 L format at €78.23 (crossed-out price €96.82), i.e. €39.12 for 75 cl: price consistent for a distinguished Tuscan DOC, without being clearly below its rank.
- you prioritise typicité & terroir (7,6 vs 6,8) : Named Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC appellation, blend 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon consistent with the zone; profile of red fruits, spezie, balsamic notes.
- you care about sangiovese: the only listing in the head-to-head to mention it
Its weak point in this head-to-head: reconnaissance (7,2). 4 grappoli Bibenda and James Suckling 90 (two mentions, one dated 2020): recognized distinctions but not of the very highest level such as 95+ or Tre Bicchieri.

Tosco's word
At €39.12 for the 75 cl, the Torrione 2023 from Petrolo offers you a more assertive Valdarno terroir and a gentler price, perfect for a meat meal without ruining you, even though its distinctions remain modest. The Il Borro Toscana IGT 2017, on the other hand, is for lovers of recognition: its three bicchieri and its multiple 90-point scores justify a higher budget, but its Bordeaux-style character and vague IGT Tuscany origin make it less typical, ideal for an initiated table rather than a discovery of the Valdarno. Their score difference is slim (7.5 versus 7.3); choose according to your wallet and your desire for prestige, not because of a major quality gap.
