vs
Chianti Classico DOCG – Fattoria Carpineta Fontalpino or Chianti Classico DOCG – Lilliano?
Same rating, two different addresses · 8.0 vs 7,9
Tosco The Toscane Cachée score of 8.0 versus 7.9 is nearly identical, but Carpineta Fontalpino's average reliability against Lilliano's high reliability creates a real gap. If you want an organic wine, with 10 to 15 years of aging potential and a price brought down to €16.69, choose the Chianti Classico DOCG from Carpineta Fontalpino, which shows a better producer score (8.3) and slightly greater typicity. On the other hand, for maximum reliability and a broader set of distinctions (2 Veronelli stars, 3 bicchieri, 4 Bibenda grappoli), Lilliano at €18.03 is safer, with versatility at the table rated higher (8.1) and a more recent vintage.
vs
Chianti Classico DOCG – Fattoria Carpineta Fontalpino or Chianti Classico DOCG – Fontodi?
Two budgets: 17 € vs. 31 € · 8.0 vs 8,0
Tosco The score of 8.0 is identical, but Fontodi's reliability is high versus medium for Carpineta, and its track record (three Veronelli stars, four Bibenda bunches, guides at 90) is richer, even though these distinctions are not tied to the 2021 vintage. For a tight budget, the Chianti Classico from Carpineta Fontalpino at €17 (€16.69) offers excellent value for money with its three bicchieri and a 10 to 15-year aging potential, ideal for a large table. If you're looking for a more prestigious bottle to impress or for a special occasion, Fontodi at €31 (€30.80) justifies its premium with broader recognition and a more complex aromatic profile, but the price gap is real.
vs
Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Gaiole – Ricasoli or Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Gaiole - Castello di Brolio – Ricasoli?
Two budgets: 171 € vs. 329 € · 8.1 vs 8,0
Tosco The 6 L Gran Selezione Gaiole – Ricasoli costs you 41.07 € per 75 cl versus 42.78 € for the 3 L Castello di Brolio, a minimal gap that doesn't separate them much. Both carry the same recognition score (8.6) and the same typicity (8.2), with very similar pairings; the first wins only on versatility (7.8 vs. 7.6) and winemaking (8.4 vs. 8.3). If you're hosting a large table and want a spectacular gesture, go for the 6 L; for a more classic cellar or a trial among a small group, the 3 L is enough, but at this price level, neither is a bargain.
vs
Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Gaiole – Ricasoli or Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Gaiole - Castello di Brolio – Ricasoli?
Two budgets: 89 € vs. 171 € · 8.0 vs 8,0
Tosco The two Gran Selezione wines from Ricasoli share the same score of 8.0, but the format changes everything: the A costs 44.49 € for 75 cl in a 1.5 L bottle, while the B, in 3 L, comes to 42.78 € per 75 cl. The B wins for you if you're looking for versatility at the table (7.6 versus 7.2) with more precise pairings and indicated aging potential, perfect for a grand meal or a fine table. The A, more affordable to purchase, suits you if you prefer a less imposing format and don't mind the serving temperature, both remaining award-winning values.
vs
Chianti Classico DOCG – Fontodi or Chianti Classico DOCG – Lilliano?
Two budgets: 18 € vs. 31 € · 8.0 vs 7,9
Tosco The price settles it first: at €18.03 versus €30.80, the Lilliano 2024 offers a clearer value for money, with a secondary guest rating and solid distinctions (2 stelle Veronelli, 3 bicchieri), perfect for a simple and generous meal. The Fontodi 2021, for its part, targets demanding enthusiasts: organic, precise aging and more extensive recognition (three bicchieri, three stelle, four grappoli, guides at 90), but its prices and its 2021 vintage, whose distinctions are not explicitly attributed, reserve it for a larger budget or a special occasion. If you want a good everyday Chianti without ruining yourself, choose Lilliano; for a gift or a refined table, Fontodi justifies the gap, though the vintage limitation should be kept in mind.
My advice: Chianti Classico
The price-to-quality ratio of Fattoria Carpineta Fontalpino is unbeatable: its 2019 Chianti Classico DOCG at 17 euros earns three bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, the highest distinction for the lowest price in the lot, with aging of at least 12 months and organic farming. For reliability and maximum recognition, the Gran Selezione from Ricasoli stands out with scores of 96 from James Suckling, 95 from Wine Spectator and 94 from Robert Parker, but be aware: the price varies by up to double depending on the format, ranging from 41.07 to 44.49 euros per 75 cl whether you choose the 6 L or the 1.5 L. Fontodi and Lilliano offer solid alternatives around 30 and 18 euros with their own distinctions, but their respective reserves (distinctions not tied to the 2021 vintage for Fontodi, cask type not specified for Lilliano) place them behind. In the end, choose Carpineta Fontalpino for everyday drinking, Ricasoli for a prestige bottle, and set aside the giant formats if you are looking for a simple trial purchase.
