Our tip
From Porto Santo Stefano, a small motorboat allows you to follow the indented coast of Monte Argentario and reach coves such as Cala del Gesso, about 18 to 20 minutes of navigation depending on speed. The bay is sheltered, but its exposure to westerly winds matters: here, choose your anchorage according to the day's wind. When the wind blows from the north, the Porto Ercole side is generally more favorable; with a southerly wind, the Porto Santo Stefano side is preferable.
The port also serves the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, but regular ferry connections and a coastal outing by boat without a license are not interchangeable: Giannutri is about one hour away by ferry, and navigation without a license is limited to six nautical miles from the coast. For a day at sea, it is therefore better to check the authorized range of the boat and the expected conditions rather than assuming a crossing from the start. The sea around Giannutri is included in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park; access and anchoring rules must be respected there.
Some models in the selection, such as BLUEMAX 5.80MT WITH SUZUKY 40HP ENGINE, no license required, in Porto Santo Stefano, are advertised without a license. In Italy, the requirement depends in particular on the engine's power and displacement, as well as the distance from the coast: ask the renter to confirm. The summer season draws more people to the coves; outside peak summer, Cala del Gesso is also noted as a bathing spot appreciated in the low season.
