The place
👥 Who it's for: Families with children who love fairy tales, walks, and cultural discoveries.
In Collodi, the name Pinocchio is not just a sign aimed at families: it belongs to the landscape and history of the village. The Parco di Pinocchio unfolds a walk among sculptures, mosaics, trees, and scenes inspired by the wooden puppet. People come for the children, of course, but also to discover a singular place, halfway between a garden and an open-air museum.
A small geographical note: despite being listed in the «Maremme & Nature» section, Collodi is located in the municipality of Pescia, in the province of Pistoia, in northern Tuscany — and not in the Maremma. The park is very family-friendly and can be integrated into a broader exploration of this part of the region.
Carlo Lorenzini, the author of the Adventures of Pinocchio, spent part of his childhood in Collodi and chose the village's name as his pseudonym. In 1951, to mark the seventieth anniversary of the story's first publication, the municipality of Pescia launched a commemorative park project. A national competition brought together 84 sculptors; Emilio Greco and Venturino Venturi won it jointly.
The park opened in 1956, then grew in stages. The Osteria del Gambero Rosso, designed by architect Giovanni Michelucci, appeared in 1963. In 1972, the Paese dei Balocchi welcomed sculptures by Pietro Consagra. The whole was conceived as a dialogue between art, vegetation, and story, rather than as a classic amusement park. This intention can be felt during the visit: the works blend into the paths and the setting, and you move forward at the pace of discoveries.
The visit unfolds like a story you walk through rather than an itinerary to check off. At the entrance, the monument Pinocchio and the Fairy by Emilio Greco and the Piazzetta dei Mosaici by Venturino Venturi set the tone. Here, the works are not simply placed next to the setting: they are part of it. Take the time to observe the mosaics and the details, rather than rushing across the square.
Further on, familiar characters appear around a bend in the path. The whale — or sea dog, depending on the versions and translations of the tale — is among the most memorable scenes for young visitors. The modern sculptures, plant shapes, and figures from the story coexist without trying to make the park too polished. It is this mix that gives the place its character, between artistic stroll and escape into a well-known story.
The park combines this artistic dimension with family activities: interactive museum, mechanical theater, puppet shows, games, creative workshops, labyrinth, and adventure course. Some installations invite you to climb or keep your balance. Comfortable shoes are therefore a good idea, and it is better to let children take their time playing without watching the clock. The visit is not limited to moving from one work to another: part of the pleasure also lies in stopping and exploring.
Nearby, the Garzoni Historic Garden and the Casa delle Farfalle extend the outing, but they are separate visits from the park's route. A combined ticket may include all three spaces: check exactly what is included when booking. If you extend your stay in the region, Montecatini Alto offers another idea for a visit, between a hilltop village and a historic funicular.
