The place

Tu y verras Porto Ercole en repaire de pirates, avec parade et débarquement en guzzi, mais rien sur la table n'est documenté.

👥 Who it's for: For families and lovers of history and live performances.

Dear friends and explorers of authentic Tuscany, get ready for an adventure that will make your freshwater sailors' hearts beat faster! Forget for a moment the gentle hills and the peaceful vineyards, because we are setting course for the coast, more precisely to Porto Ercole, for an event that transforms this charming village into a true den of buccaneers: The Night of the Pirates.

Every year, on the first weekend of May, Porto Ercole, this pearl of the Argentario in the province of Grosseto, changes face completely. It is a total immersion in history and folklore, a grandiose spectacle that attracts crowds from all over Italy, and even from further afield, for an unforgettable weekend of festivities. Authenticity is on the agenda, the experience is guaranteed, and it is at its most photogenic!

A historical dive into the heart of the Maremma

The Argentario, with its coves and watchtowers, has always been a coveted land, and its history is punctuated by corsair raids. The Notte dei Pirati is not just a simple festival, it is a true evocation of the assaults and pillages that took place here centuries ago. The most famous of them was that of Khayr Al Din, known as Barbarossa, who in June 1544 seized Porto Ercole, leaving behind him a trail of destruction and 200 prisoners. The festival, of course, promises a spectacle without prisoners, but it does not forget its historical roots for all that, offering a fascinating blend of play and commemoration.

Porto Ercole, pirate den

From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere is palpable. The entire village is transformed. The lungomare, the small beaches, the bars and the restaurants turn into taverns and pirate dens. Suggestive settings, elaborate costumes, ornaments and choreographies all contribute to creating a lively and immersive atmosphere. You will feel as though you are landing in a besieged port, with black flags floating in the wind and shouts of «Ciurmaaaaaa!» echoing through the streets.

The programme of festivities: a weekend full of emotions

The festivities often begin as early as Friday with activities for the «little pirates», but the highlight of the show takes place on Saturday. Here is a preview of what awaits you:

  • The gathering of the crews: Meet at Piazza Amerigo Vespucci, the car park at the entrance to the village. This is where the hundreds of extras, organised into «ciurme» (crews), prepare for the grand parade.
  • The grand parade: Hundreds of costumed extras invade the village streets in a noisy and colorful procession. The parade travels along the Viale Caravaggio and the Lungomare Andrea Doria up to the «Covo dei Pirati».
  • The rowing race on the water: On the beaches, the pirates face off in a crazy rowing race to seize a flag floating on the water.
  • The spectacular landing: This is the most anticipated moment! At sunset, the scene moves to the sea. The crews board the traditional «guzzi» (typical local boats) and stage the famous «sbarco dei pirati». Cannon shots, curtains of smoke, gunfire and shouts fill the air. The sailing ship BARBAROSSA emerges from the mist, followed by the crews who storm the beaches, all accompanied by colored smoke and pyrotechnic explosions.
  • The ring of fire: Pirate divers emerge from the sea, encircling the crews with a ring of fire, adding a spectacular touch to the assault.
  • The fireworks: A unique pyrotechnic show lights up the sky of Porto Ercole, bringing the landing to a beautiful close.
  • The nighttime treasure hunt: At the signal of a cannon shot, the highly anticipated nighttime treasure hunt begins! It is a team game filled with skill challenges, duels, riddles, and costumes, which winds through the streets of the old village and the lungomare Andrea Doria. The goal? Find the key to the chest containing the symbolic treasure of the pirates of Porto Ercole: ten silver coins covered in gold. The hunt ends with three cannon shots and the awarding of prizes to the winning crew.

Sunday is generally devoted to prize ceremonies for the best crews and the treasure hunt, as well as to a corsairs' regatta in which the pirates set off from the beaches to «climb» the islet located near the port.

Practical information and tips for a successful visit

The Notte dei Pirati is a free event, which is no small advantage. However, given its growing success, it is strongly recommended to plan ahead for accommodation if you wish to spend the weekend there. Porto Ercole is a small village, and spots are in high demand! What I particularly appreciate about this event is the way the whole village takes part. Not only the extras, but also the shopkeepers, the restaurateurs, everyone pitches in to make the event ever more spectacular and welcoming. It's a true village festival, but on an impressive scale, with hundreds of extras and thousands of visitors every year. If you want to watch the grand landing without getting trampled by the crowd, climb up a little earlier to the heights of the Spanish Rocca: the view of the illuminated boats in the bay is simply breathtaking!
