Campagnatico: The Medieval Secret of the Tuscan Maremma

Ah, the Maremma! This wild and authentic land of Tuscany, often overlooked by the crowds in favor of the Chianti hills or the cities of art. And yet, it holds unsuspected treasures, villages where time seems to have stood still. Today, I'm taking you to Campagnatico, a small medieval marvel perched on its gentle hills, a true favorite for lovers of the real Italy.

Imagine a village where every stone tells a story, where the scent of olive trees blends with the distant echo of a glorious past. That's exactly what you'll find in Campagnatico, a place where the’authenticity is the key word.

A Journey Through Time: History and Architecture

Campagnatico is not a village like any other. Its strategic position, overlooking the Ombrone valley, made it a coveted stronghold over the centuries. Born from a possession of the Abbey of Saint-Sauveur, it quickly fell under the control of the powerful family Aldobrandeschi in the 10th century. And if that name rings a bell, that's normal! Dante Alighieri himself immortalized it in the eleventh canto of Purgatory, evoking the assassination of Omberto Aldobrandeschi in 1259. An anecdote that will remind you how alive history is here!

After the Aldobrandeschi, it was the Tolomei of Siena who set their sights on this fertile land, before Campagnatico joined the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the mid-16th century. This succession of dominations left a fascinating architectural imprint.

As you stroll through its narrow streets, you will discover a remarkably preserved heritage:

  • The Rocca Aldobrandesca : This imposing quadrangular stone tower dominates the village, leaning against the ramparts. It is a striking vestige of the power of the Aldobrandeschi. Its stone walls and offset windows give it a unique character.
  • The 2. Walls of Campagnatico : Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, they almost entirely encircle the village. You can admire well-preserved sections, some harmoniously integrated into the buildings. A watchtower was even transformed into the bell tower of the church of San Giovanni Battista.
  • The’4. Parish church of San Giovanni Battista 5. (13th century) : Don't miss its interesting cycle of frescoes.
  • The’6. Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia.
  • The former Romanesque church of Sant'Antonio Abate 9. : Transformed into a theater in the 19th century, it testifies to the repurposing of places over the ages.

Don't hesitate to go through the 11. Porta Grossetana, one of the ancient access gates, for a total immersion in this medieval past.

13. Generous and Preserved Nature

Campagnatico is also an ode to Tuscan nature. The village is nestled in the heart of a rich Mediterranean maquis, 15. , surrounded by gentle hills covered with vineyards and olive groves. Here, exceptional wines and olive oils are produced, reflecting the generosity of this land.

18. The area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts:

  • Some 19. hiking and mountain biking trails 20. wind through cultivated fields, olive groves and forests, along the Ombrone river or climbing towards the hills. The landscapes change with the seasons, offering intense color palettes.
  • The fauna is omnipresent: wild boars, roe deer, porcupines and numerous species of birds of prey populate these spaces, making every outing an opportunity to discover the biodiversity of the Maremma.
  • The proximity of the Maremma Natural Park and the Tyrrhenian coast (about 20 km from Grosseto and 50 km from Porto Santo Stefano) makes it a perfect starting point for exploring this diverse region, between sea and mountains. The village also offers a breathtaking view of the sea from the Parco dell'Uccellina and the mountains of the Amiata.

Flavors of the Maremma: An Authentic Cuisine

The gastronomy of Campagnatico is a reflection of the Maremma: simple, rustic and incredibly tasty. It is the fruit of a peasant tradition that favors local and seasonal products.

  • The Cinghiale alla Maremmana (wild boar Maremma-style) is the must-try specialty. Often simmered with spices and red wine, it is a generous and comforting dish. To learn more about this specialty, don't hesitate to check out our article on the wild boar cacciatora style.
  • The Tortelli Maremmani, , large ravioli filled with ricotta and delicately flavored with herbs, are a delight. You can even learn to prepare them during a Tortelli Maremmani workshop.
  • Don't forget to taste the local charcuterie and cheeses, often served as a starter, as well as the crostata with ricotta and jam.

All accompanied by a good glass of local wine, of course!

When to Visit Campagnatico?

Although charming all year round, the month of September is particularly suitable for a visit. It is during this period that various patron saint festivals take place, but above all the famous Palio dei Ciuchi (Palio of the Donkeys). This colorful folk event sees the village districts (Castello, Centro, Nobile Rione Pieve and Santa Maria) compete in a frantic race of female donkeys along Via Roma. A unique and joyful experience that will immerse you in the heart of local traditions! If you like traditional festivals, the Festa dell'Uva in Scansano is also an event not to be missed in September.
