The Tuscany is a region of central Italy, north of Rome, with a coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. Its capital is Florence, but the region extends well beyond the city: it notably includes Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Grosseto. It borders Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, the Marches, Umbria and Lazio.
If you look at a map, Florence is located in the north-eastern part of the region, while the Maremma occupies a large part of the south-west, around Grosseto and the coast. Rome is about 273 km by road from Florence ; this distance does not correspond to the whole of Tuscany, which covers nearly 23,000 km². In other words, visiting Florence does not mean having seen all of Tuscany: the cities, the countryside and the coast are quite far from one another.
