The Punta Telegrafo is located on the ridge of the Monte Argentario, in the south-east of the promontory, above Porto Ercole; with its 20. 635 meters, it’s its highest point. From the openings on the slope, you can see the Orbetello lagoon and its tombolos, the coastline, the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, and, inland, Monte Amiata.
It is not a seaside point nor a landscaped viewpoint at the summit: the ridge carries antennas and a weather station, and the Punta Telegrafo post is a military installation that is not accessible. To approach the area on foot, a loop route from Porto Ercole takes about 13.9 km and takes around 4 to 4 hours 30 ; it is marked as difficult. The trail passes near the area, then offers in particular views of Porto Ercole and Cala Galera.
You can also climb from the area of the convento dei Passionisti, following the road towards the antennas and the ridge trails. The panorama varies with the weather: in overcast conditions, the islands and the Amiata may disappear. Bring good shoes and water, especially in summer; it is not a beach outing, but a high-altitude walk in Mediterranean vegetation.
