What to see in Vetulonia?

À Vetulonia, above all visit the Isidoro Falchi archaeological museum, the remains of the ancient Etruscan city and the tombs of the necropolis. The museum, on piazza Vetluna, helps you understand what you will later see on site: it notably displays objects from the local burials. The full-price admission is 5 € for the museum alone; in October, the announced opening hours are 10 am to 6 pm, from Tuesday to Sunday.

In the village, also look out for the remains of the Etruscan walls, of which a section of about 30 meters is visible. Then follow the Via dei Sepolcri to see the tumuli of the Belvedere and the 16. Pietrera, as well as the archaeological areas of Scavi Città and Costa Murata. The archaeological areas are free; plan suitable shoes, as the visit takes place outdoors. The tomb of the 18. Diavolino II is reported as temporarily closed: don't count on it without checking before you go.

The village is small and the visit is mainly worthwhile if you're interested in the Etruscans; don't expect a long succession of monuments in the heart of the village. From the heights, you also have views over the Grosseto plain. For site opening hours, check on the day itself: they vary by season and may be changed in case of weather alerts.

Vetulonia is less about grand ancient spectacle than about the puzzle: a few clues in the landscape, and your imagination does the rest. If you like playing detective rather than ticking off monuments, you are in the right place.
