At Monte Argentario, you can choose between short walks to the coves, loops around the villages and longer hikes along the ridges. For an easy outing, theanello di Porto Ercole takes about 5.8 km and takes around 1 h 30. If you want to walk down to the sea, the trail from Cala Grande goes through the maquis; the descent is steep, and the climb back up requires strong legs. The one from Cala del Gesso, starting from Porto Santo Stefano, is more demanding, with rocky sections: avoid it in street shoes.
For a more challenging hike, theAnello dei Crinali traverses the heights of the promontory over about 11 km (allow 3 h 30); the circuit of the Quattro Forti, starting from Porto Ercole, is about 9 km and takes around 4 h. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant periods; in summer, set out early, as some paths are exposed and it quickly gets hot. Bring water, shoes with grippy soles and a recent map: not all trails are equally checked or maintained.
