What are the best things to see and do in Manciano in the Maremma?

À Manciano, combine the visit of the hilltop village with a swim at the Cascate del Mulino and a detour to Montemerano. In the center, go up to the Cassero to see the surroundings, then pass through Piazza Garibaldi and the church of San Leonardo. The Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory of the Fiora Valley displays objects found in the region; its opening hours may vary depending on the season, so check before you go. For a short stroll in a medieval village, Montemerano is located about 6 km : the Piazza del Castello and the church of San Giorgio are worth the trip.

The natural pools of the Cascate del Mulino, near Saturnia (about 12 km of Manciano) are freely accessible and the water stays around 37 °C. The site is pleasant, but it can be very crowded, especially on weekends; the rocks are slippery. Bring water sandals and a towel, and don't count on spa comfort: these are open-air pools. If you have a car, you can also go as far as Pitigliano, about 18 km, for its center built on tuff. At the table, taste the ciaffagnone, a local thin crêpe, or the sheep's cheeses. A car makes visiting much easier: the villages and the thermal springs are scattered, and public transport is limited.

In Manciano, keep some slack in your day: this corner is best savored by zigzagging rather than rushing through the stops.
