What is a good road trip itinerary for Italy?

For a first loop of 8 à 10 jours, je ferais Rome–Orvieto–Val d’Orcia–Maremma–Siena–Florence, renting the car at the exit of Rome rather than in the city. From Rome, allow about 120 km and 1 h 30 to reach Orvieto; visit the center, then sleep in the surrounding area. Continue toward Pienza and the Val d’Orcia — around 100 kmbut plan for instead 1 h 30 to 2 h on the back roads. Keep two nights for the villages and the landscapes: the distances seem short, but you drive slower than you might imagine.

Then head down toward the Maremma for two or three nights, with a base near Grosseto, Scansano or the coast; from Pienza, allow about 100 à 120 km and near 2 h depending on the stage. Come back up via Siena — environ 75 km and 1 h 15 from Grosseto — then finish in Florence, à quelque 75 km. The historic centers often have limited traffic zones: park outside and check your accommodation's access before entering, as a camera may record your license plate. April to June and September-October are generally more comfortable for driving than the height of summer. Don't try to add Venice or the Dolomites: you would spend too much time behind the wheel.

Keep some slack in the schedule: in Tuscany, the detour that wasn't planned often ends up being the best memory.
