When to visit the Etruscan roads of Maremma to avoid the crowds?

To avoid the crowds on the Vie Cave of the Maremma, aim for April-May or the second half of September and October, on weekdays and early in the morning. You will enjoy temperatures generally more favorable for walking than in the middle of summer, without the August holiday crowds. The surroundings of Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano are nevertheless visited places: a Saturday or a public holiday can be busy, even off-season.

The best compromise, in my opinion, is May or late September: the days are fairly long and the heat is in principle less oppressive than in July-August, especially in the narrow passages. From Pitigliano, the full tour of the Vie Cave represents a few kilometers and can take up to 3 hours of walking. After heavy rain, the paths can be slippery; autumn is also wetter, with an increased risk in October and November. Wear shoes with good soles and check the condition of the trails before setting off. In winter, you will meet few people, but the days are short and the weather more uncertain: it is not necessarily the most practical choice for linking several itineraries.

In the Vie Cave, keep some margin to lift your eyes from your shoes: the tuff walls deserve that you take your time.
