To visit family-run estates by car, focus mainly on the hills of Scansano, de Massa Marittima and Manciano : the cellars are scattered across the countryside, so the car is the most practical way to get around. Near Massa Marittima, Morisfarms is about 10 minutes from the center. The family offers tastings by reservation, starting from around 15 € per person for three wines and bruschette. In summer, tastings are possible until late afternoon; off-season, the hours are shorter.
In the Scansano area, look at Podere Castellaccia : it is a family-run operation offering cellar tours and tastings, but some options require at least 6 personnes. On the Manciano side, Erik Banti also welcomes visitors at its estate, by appointment. In all three cases, call before setting out: visits are not necessarily possible without a reservation and hours may vary depending on the season. The last few miles go through country roads; allow some extra time and pick a driver who won't be tasting if they're driving back.
