The “Giannutri marine sanctuary” refers to the protected waters around the island of Giannutri, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, south of Tuscany, in Italy. The island belongs to theTuscan archipelago and to the municipality of Isola del Giglio, in the province of Grosseto; it lies approximately 11.5 km from the Argentario promontory and at 15.5 km from the island of Giglio. It is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, which also protects a vast marine area around its coasts.
Not to be confused with a single place officially named the “Giannutri marine sanctuary”: the expression can also bring to mind the Pelagos sanctuary, a much larger marine mammal protection area in the Mediterranean, of which these waters are part. To reach the island, the boat departs from Porto Santo Stefano, on the Argentario; the crossing takes about an hour. On site, certain land and marine areas are regulated: check the access rules before setting off, especially if you come with your own boat or plan a diving trip.
