How to get to San Galgano to see the sword in the stone?

The simplest way is to go by car: from Siena, allow about 35 km and 40 to 50 minutes up to San Galgano, in the municipality of Chiusdino. Between the abbey and the hermitage, the road is rural but paved. Enter " Eremo di Montesiepi » or « Abbey of San Galgano " into your GPS, rather than the center of Chiusdino. There is a parking lot near the abbey; then follow the signs on foot to the hermitage.

Note, the sword is not in the roofless abbey: it is located in the round chapel of theEremo di Montesiepi, a few minutes' walk away, slightly uphill. If you come by bus from Siena, line 116 serves the area of Chiusdino, but the schedules are limited and the stop does not necessarily drop you off in front of the site: there may be several kilometers left to walk. Check the schedules for your day of visit and plan a taxi for the last stretch if necessary. There is no train station nearby; without a car, the excursion therefore requires a bit of organization.
