How do you get to the Maremma from Rome or Pisa?

The simplest option is to head to Maremma by car if you want to visit several villages or stay in the countryside; by train, aim for the station closest to your accommodation, as the region is extensive. From Rome, allow about 180 km and 2 h 30 to 3 h by road up to Grosseto, via the A12 then the SS1, the Via Aurelia. From Pisa, allow about 150 to 160 km and nearly 2 h, mainly via the A12 and the SS1. In summer, on weekends and holiday departure days, allow extra time on the road.

The train is a good option for reaching the coastal towns: direct trains connect Rome to Grosseto in about 1 h 40 to 2 h 40 depending on the service, and Pisa to Grosseto in about 1 h 40 to 2 h 15. Tickets can cost in the range of 10 à 30 €, depending on the train and the time of booking. You can also get off at Follonica or Orbetello-Monte Argentario if it is closer to your stay. From the station, buses and taxis are available, but connections to the beaches and the inland villages are sometimes inconvenient, especially in the evening: check the schedules or rent a car for the last leg.

The real trap is thinking of the Maremma as a single destination: between the coast, hilltop villages and countryside, the last stretch of the journey can change the whole getaway. Choose your area to stay first, then the transport — not the other way around!
