Tosco Tosco

Wild Maremma is the beating heart of Hidden Tuscany. This region of lower Tuscany, long overlooked by mainstream tourist circuits in favor of Florence and Siena, preserves nature of remarkable diversity: deserted beaches backed by centuries-old pine forests, wetlands frequented by flamingos and spoonbills, massifs covered with macchia and cork oaks, the forests of Amiata with their high-altitude charms.

The Maremma Natural Park (Parco Naturale della Maremma) forms the backbone of this selection. With its 9,000 hectares of coastline and protected pine forests between Alberese and Talamone, it is one of the best-preserved natural areas in central Italy. The Maremmana horses and the butteri — Tuscan cowboys on horseback — are its emblematic inhabitants.

But Maremma extends far beyond the park's boundaries. Monte Argentario, the Orbetello lagoons, the Caldane woods or the Farma gorges: every corner reveals a Tuscany far from selfie sticks and tourist buses. Our fact sheets cover this diversity with documentary rigor stemming from repeated personal visits.

For hikers, Maremma offers dozens of little-frequented trails, often unmarked or poorly maintained — our fact sheets specify access conditions, recommended seasons and standard precautions (dense vegetation, presence of wild boar, wetlands varying with the rains). In summer, priority goes to the coast and the hot springs; spring and autumn are ideal for hiking and nature discovery.

Wild Maremma is also a gourmet Maremma: the 'acquacotta, the cinghiale, the pecorino from Manciano, the Morellino di Scansano — a robust and authentic cuisine that we highlight in our fact sheets and themed itineraries.
