Posidonia

Posidonia

Posidonia, you'll come across it on the beaches of Maremma, especially off-season. It's not seaweed, but a marine plant endemic to the Mediterranean. It forms vast underwater meadows, essential for the ecosystem. When it dies, its leaves and roots accumulate on the shore in brown mounds, sometimes quite imposing. If you expect pristine white sand everywhere, you'll be surprised. These deposits are natural, they protect the coast from erosion and shelter a microfauna. Don't see them as dirt, but as a sign of good marine health.
