👥 Who it's for: Adventurous travelers and lovers of wild nature, in search of authenticity
Ah, the Argentario... A jewel case of wild nature thrown into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Among its treasures, there is one I absolutely must share: the Cala di Cacciarella. Forget the crowded beaches, the parasols lined up like soldiers, and the hubbub of street vendors. Here, another Tuscany opens up to you, an authentic Tuscany, one that must be earned, but that rewards you a hundredfold.
Imagine a small cove nestled between imposing cliffs, where the Mediterranean scrub clings on with obstinacy, exhaling its scents of myrtle and rosemary. That is the Cacciarella. A narrow ribbon of pebbles and fine sand, caressed by waters of absolute clarity, almost unreal. It is the very essence of the wild Argentario, one of those rare pearls one would like to keep secret, but which are too beautiful not to be shared.
Like all gems, the Cacciarella does not reveal itself without effort. And that's a good thing! It is what preserves its tranquility and its inimitable charm. Access is via exclusively on foot, via a panoramic trail that winds along the coast. Allow about 500 meters of walking, , for an estimated duration of 15 to 20 minutes on the way down.
The starting point? From Porto Santo Stefano, , take the legendary Strada Panoramica. The trail is on your left, just after a small parking area, next to a private gate (at number 128), framed by two large cypress trees. You can't miss it. But be careful, the adventure begins here!
This path, although short, is steep and quite rugged, especially towards the end where the descent is made easier by natural steps made of earth and roots. That is why I strongly advise against flip-flops or open shoes. The Hiking shoes or closed sneakers are essential to descend safely and enjoy the beauty of the landscape without any mishaps. The way back up, especially under the sun of the Maremma, is a more physical ordeal, but the memory of the swim will give you wings! Access is also not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
The Cacciarella is not only a paradise for the senses, it is also a place steeped in history and legends. Overlooking the cove, you will glimpse an ancient watchtower, once known as « Scaciadiavoli » (the devil hunter). This nickname is said to come from a notorious pirate, Aydin Rais of Smyrna, who led numerous raids along this coast. It is indeed because of these pirate incursions that the cove and the tower were later named Cacciarella.
But the most fascinating story is that of the Grotta del Turco. Just before reaching the beach, on the eastern tip of the cliff, the trail passes by the entrance to this small natural cave. The legend tells that a fishing boat from Porto Santo Stefano hid there, narrowly escaping an attack by Turkish pirates who infested the coast. It is even said that a Turk's body was found there. A quick visit to this mysterious lair adds a touch of magic to your excursion, transporting you centuries back, to the time when the Maremma was a wild and dangerous land.
Once you arrive at the bottom, the sight is breathtaking. The water, incredibly transparent, reveals a seabed teeming with life. The Cacciarella is a true aquarium naturel, ideal for snorkeling enthusiasts. Don't forget your mask and snorkel! The posidonia meadows are home to a rich and colorful underwater fauna and flora. You will be able to observe fish, crustaceans, and perhaps even starfish. It is a total immersion in nature, far from all artifice.
And for more experienced swimmers and divers, a surprise awaits beneath the waves. At a depth of about 15 meters, between the Cacciarella and its neighbor, the magnificent Cala Grande, lies a submerged statue of Christ the Redeemer. A unique experience, to be attempted with caution and respect for this sacred place.
It is crucial to understand that the Cacciarella is an entirely wild beach. This means there is absolutely no services : no bar, no restaurant, no toilets, no showers, no parasol or lounge chair rentals. Self-sufficiency is therefore essential!
Here are my tips for a perfect day at the Cacciarella:
La Cacciarella is the ideal place for those seeking to disconnect, to reconnect with raw nature and to live an authentic experience. It's an escape out of time, where the song of cicadas and the lapping of the waves are the only music. If you are ready to trade your comfort for the silence of these rocks and the wild beauty of the Maremma, then Cala di Cacciarella awaits you. It is one of those Tuscan memories that you keep preciously, and that will make you want to come back again and again.
