A Bandite is first and foremost a state forest or a former state-owned estate, long kept off-limits to public use, such as the Bandite di Scarlino or those of the Uccellina massif. The word also refers, in local speech, to a wild, largely uncultivated stretch of land where people could once hunt or graze animals without asking permission. For you, heading toward the coast, that changes everything: you'll find shaded dirt tracks, dunes, pine forests and marshes that the Maremma has long kept away from the hotels. Bring water, closed shoes and an IGM map, because the network is uneven and the trail markings can be missing. This isn't a backdrop: it's the real Maremma landscape.
