In Tuscany, the main towns of the Maremma are Grosseto, Follonica, Castiglione della Pescaia, Orbetello and Massa Marittima. 1. Maremma has no single administrative border: the name refers to a geographical and cultural region, whose heart lies in the province of Grosseto. Depending on the definition used, Maremma can also extend northwards, towards Livorno and Pisa.
On the coast and around the lagoons, you will also find Scarlino, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, the latter two being localities of the municipality of Monte Argentario, as well as Capalbio. In the hinterland, the best-known villages include Pitigliano, Sorano, Manciano, Scansano and Magliano in Toscana. 2. The province of Grosseto has 28 municipalities, but not all of them correspond to Maremma in the strictest geographical sense.
To organise your stay, think in terms of sectors rather than a single base town: Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia for the northern coast, Grosseto and the Maremma park for the centre, Orbetello and the Argentario further south, and Pitigliano or Sorano for the inland area. The roads between the coast and the inland villages often take longer than the map suggests; a car is handy if you want to combine several sectors.
