What to visit in Castiglione della Pescaia in Tuscany?

À Castiglione della Pescaia, first visit the medieval village: climb up the cobbled streets to the ramparts and the Aragonese castle, then walk past the church of San Giovanni Battista and the Palazzo Centurioni. The castle is private and generally closed to visitors: you will mostly see it from the outside. Allow 1 to 2 hours to wander at a leisurely pace; the climb is steep in places and the cobblestones are not practical with a stroller or fragile shoes.

To understand the history of the landscape, go to the Casa Rossa Ximenes, built in 1765 for the land reclamation works of the Diaccia Botrona marshes. Its museum presents the reclamation and the ecosystem of the wetland; the adult ticket costs about 3 €. Opening hours vary by season and the museum closes on certain days: check before you go. If you have a car, continue on to Vetulonia, about 23 km and 30 minutes by car. The Isidoro Falchi archaeological museum and the Etruscan necropolises give the visit a real heritage dimension. Without a car, the excursion is less straightforward: public transport usually involves a detour through Grosseto.

The real common thread here is contrast: behind the seaside postcard lie landscapes shaped by man and a much older history. Keep some curiosity for the hinterland, it offers a lovely counterpoint.
