The main natural pools of Tuscany are hot water basins, especially in the south of the region: at Saturniain the Maremma, at Bagni San Filippoin Val d'Orcia, and at Petriolobetween the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The Cascate del Mulinonear Saturnia, are free and open all year round; the water stays warm even in winter. In return, the site is very busy, especially during the day and on weekends: aim for early morning or evening.
À Bagni San Filippothe trail of the Fosso Bianco leads to basins in the middle of the woods. The white formation called Balena Bianca is fragile: admire it without touching it or bathing in it; other basins are located along the stream. At Petriolothe sulphurous springs feed small basins on the edge of the Farma; the water comes out at about 43 °Cbut its temperature drops as it mixes with that of the river. The three sites are rustic: bring non-slip shoes, a towel and a bag to carry away your waste, and don't count on the facilities of a spa establishment. You will also find free basins at San Casciano dei Bagniin Valdichiana. These are thermal baths, not freshwater pools for swimming.
