Where is the Gorello river?

The Gorello river is located at Saturnia, in the municipality of Manciano, in Maremma, in southern Tuscany, in the province of Grosseto. Strictly speaking, it is a thermal watercourse rather than a large river: it carries the hot water from the Saturnia spring to the famous Cascate del Mulino, also called the Gorello waterfalls.

To see it, look for the waterfalls on the SP10, between the villages of Saturnia and Montemerano. They are about 2 km from the centre of Saturnia, a few minutes by car; from Manciano, allow about 14 km. It is at the site of the old mill that the Gorello forms natural terraced pools, where you can swim. Access to the pools is free, but parking is in designated areas nearby and may be paid. The water stays warm all year round, around 37 °C at the source; at the waterfalls, it can be a little less warm. In summer and on weekends, the site is often busy: coming early or late in the day helps avoid the crowds.

Here, the charm is not in the height of the falls, but in the stepped pools: come for a paddle, not to look for a monumental waterfall!
