Where can you see flamingos in Italy?

You can see flamingos mainly in the lagoons and coastal marshes: the best areas are the Orbetello lagoon, in Tuscany, the Po Delta, especially around Comacchio and the Cervia salt pans, and the ponds of Molentargius or Santa Gilla, near Cagliari, in Sardinia. In Orbetello, the lagoon surrounds the town; at Molentargius, the wetlands are on the outskirts of Cagliari.

You can observe them all year round at several of these sites, but their presence and numbers vary: they are wild birds, not a guaranteed attraction. In the Po Delta, they nest notably in the Comacchio salt pans between spring and summer; in winter, the wetlands remain good observation spots too. In Orbetello, try the trails and observation points of the reserve; for the Cervia or Comacchio salt pans, some visits are done with a guide and depending on opening periods.

If you are staying in Maremma, Orbetello is the simplest choice. Allow one to two hours to stroll and watch quietly, more if you visit a guided reserve. Bring binoculars: the birds may stay far from the banks, and their distance changes depending on the water level and accessible areas.

Watch for their funny posture when they dig through the water, head down: they look like waders looking for a coin! It's the little show that makes watching them fun, even from a distance.
