Yes, a car is strongly recommended if you want to visit several parts of the Maremma, especially the inland villages, the less accessible beaches and the rural estates. Distances add up quickly: Pitigliano is located about 80 km from Grosseto, and the roads often cross hilly areas where journeys take longer than the map suggests.
Without a car, it is doable by organizing your stay around a well-served base. Trains notably stop at Grosseto, Follonica and Orbetello, and buses connect Grosseto to places like Alberese, the access point to the Maremma Natural Park. But connections can be limited, and some lines to the coast only run in summer: in 2026, the Mare Bus lines to several seaside resorts operate from June 13 to August 30. For a car-free stay, check the schedules for your dates and choose your stops accordingly; you may have to give up a few visits or spend more time traveling. If you want to go from a village to a beach and then to a natural site in the same day, rent a car.
