Our tip
From the marina, the islet of Sparviero and its tower can be reached by a short navigation: allow about ten minutes at five knots, depending on the route and the sea. The Porchetti rocks, however, require keeping your distance. For a coastal outing, the headland opens onto the small coves of Cala Tartanella and Cala Galera; Cala Violina is further north, in the protected sector of the Costiere di Scarlino. Anchoring is chosen according to the wind: the port, sheltered by its breakwater, offers a safe refuge, but no cove should be considered sheltered in all weather. With a boat like the Beneteau Oceanis 40 in Punta Ala, Portoferraio, on the island of Elba, represents a crossing of about 20 nautical miles, or nearly four hours at five knots, excluding wind variations.
The simplest period to enjoy the coves runs from late spring to early autumn; in summer, the coast and bathing areas are busier. Cala Violina limits beach access to 700 people per day in season, with reservation: arriving by sea does not exempt you from this rule if you land. Punta Ala and the Sparviero belong to a Natura 2000 site: this is not a general authorization to anchor everywhere; choose a sandy bottom, avoid seagrass beds and respect the markers. For Elba, beyond six nautical miles from the coast, a boating license is required; nearby, the requirement also depends on the engine. Check the conditions of the rented boat before departure.
