Our tip
Pitigliano is one of the most spectacular towns in Tuscany: a medieval village built directly on a spur of volcanic tufa, with house facades that seem to rise straight out of the rock. Nicknamed the Piccola Gerusalemme for its former Jewish community (16th-century synagogue, museo ebraico), Pitigliano is also the starting point for the via cava the most impressive in the region: the Etruscan path carved into volcanic tufa over several kilometers.
Activities in Pitigliano are centered on discovering the town's exceptional heritage: guided tours of the città del tufo and the vie cave, tasting of Bianco di Pitigliano DOC (dry white wine made from Trebbiano grown on volcanic terroir), local cooking classes featuring the specialties of Tuscan Jewish cuisine (sfratti, impade), hiking in the Fiora gorges and the vie cave toward Sorano. Pitigliano is 18 km from Manciano and 7 km from Sorano.
