tramontane

La tramontana is that cold, dry wind that comes down from the Alps, or more broadly from the north. In Maremma, you feel it mainly in winter and spring. It chases away the clouds, so if you see it blowing, get ready for a clear blue sky, perfect for photos. But it can also make the air crisp, especially on the coast or at altitude. For your hikes, that means incredible visibility but also an intensified feeling of cold. Remember to bring a windbreaker, even if the sun is shining. It cleans the atmosphere, that's true, but it can also surprise you with its strength.
