Home › Glossary › Torre Medicea
A Torre Medicea is a watchtower built by the Medici, mainly between the 16th and 17th centuries. You see many of them along the Maremma coast, from Talamone to Ansedonia. They served to protect the coastline from pirate raids, particularly Ottoman ones. Today, these towers are often privately owned or converted into luxury residences. If you spot one, know that you are looking at a piece of defensive history, strategically placed to watch over the sea. They are a strong visual landmark of the Tuscan coastal landscape, reminding you of the past importance of this maritime area.
