Home › Glossary › strade bianche
The strade bianche, literally "white roads", are those unpaved dirt tracks that crisscross the Maremma. They are not all identical; some are well maintained, others rougher with stones and ruts. They are white because they are made of limestone gravel, typical of the region. For you, the traveler, they are the gateway to authentic landscapes, vineyards and remote olive groves. That is where you find the isolated agritourism farms and the panoramic views that you won't see from the asphalt. Be prepared for dust in summer and mud after rain, but that's the price of immersion.
