pronaos

The pronaos is that small covered space right in front of the entrance of an Etruscan or Roman temple, recognizable by its columns that support the roof. In Maremma, you'll often see it on archaeological sites like Roselle or Cosa. It served as a sacred threshold, a transition zone before accessing the cella, the heart of the temple. For you, it's a key architectural clue. If you see remains of columns and an open space in front of a structure, there's a good chance you're standing before the remains of a pronaos, helping you visualize the temple's original layout.
