The Palazzo del Podestà is the former seat of the Podestà, the local governor of a medieval town. In Maremma, you'll see them in many historic centres. It's not a palace in the royal sense, but rather an administrative and judicial building. Often, it stands out for its sober architecture and the coats of arms sculpted on its façade, witnesses to the noble families who held power. It gives you an idea of the political organisation of the time and of the town's importance. Today, it sometimes houses the town hall, a museum or offices.
