Home › Glossary › Mediterranean garrigue
Mediterranean scrubland, you come across it everywhere in Maremma. It's that low, dense vegetation, dominated by kermes oak, juniper, cistus, rosemary and thyme. Not a forest, nor a desert, but an in-between that is fragrant and drought-resistant. For you, the traveler, it's the heady scent of the countryside, the refuge of the wild boars and roe deer you might spot. It's also the landscape that frames many hiking trails, a robust and authentic backdrop, far from cultivated fields.
