In October, you can mainly hike in the the Maremma regional park, swim at the cascades de Saturnia, visit the tuff villages and watch birds around Orbetello. The heat is generally less intense than in summer, but bring a jacket and check the weather: the trails can be less pleasant after rain.
At the park, choose a hiking or cycling route according to your level; usually allow 2 to 4 hours for an outing, and about 5 to 10 € for the paid trails, depending on the route. In autumn, the visit can be done without a mandatory guide. The waterfalls of the Mulino, near Saturnia, are freely accessible: the water is warm, but the site remains busy, especially on weekends. For a quieter swim, go early in the morning.
Inland, stroll through the historic centers of Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano, known for their narrow streets and paths carved into the tuff. Around the Orbetello lagoon, autumn is a good time for birdwatching; the WWF oasis welcomes individual visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, subject to closure in bad weather. The beach remains possible in fine weather, but swimming, restaurants and services may already be running at reduced pace.
