What can you do in Grosseto?

À Grosseto, you can walk along the ramparts, visit the Duomo and devote part of the day to a museum: the historic centre is easy to explore on foot. Start on the piazza Dante, in front of the cathedral San Lorenzo, whose façade blends white and pink marble. Then follow the Medici walls : their circuit is about 3 km long and makes for a pleasant walk, especially when it's hot, thanks to the trees lining the bastions.

To understand the history of the Maremma, the MAAM – Museo archeologico e d'arte della Maremma presents collections ranging from prehistory to the medieval period. Allow about 1 to 2 hours depending on your interest in archaeology. Nearby, the cultural hub Le Clarisse brings together in particular the Gianfranco Luzzetti art collection and temporary exhibitions; opening hours may vary, so check before you go. You can also head to the church of San Francesco, then stroll along the corso Carducci.

For a relaxed visit, plan half a day ; Grosseto is a modest-sized town, and its centre won't necessarily fill a whole day if you don't visit the museums. To plan your route, I've also detailed the steps in my guide to Grosseto and the Maremma.

I would keep Grosseto as an urban interlude between two getaways in the Maremma: it's a change of pace without requiring you to rush around.
