The place
Pousse la porte de ce palazzo du XIIIe siècle pour ses collections étrusques de Vetulonia et la stèle de Vado all'Arancio, à Massa Marittima.
👥 Who it's for: For enthusiasts of history, archaeology and authentic Tuscan culture.
Massa Marittima is a medieval gem nestled in the Colline Metallifere, a region of the Maremma that is both secret and authentic. Far from the crowds of Florence or Siena, this town offers a deep immersion into Tuscan history. The Palazzo del Podestà, dating from the 13th century, is one of its most precious gems. Its travertine façade, adorned with the emblems of the ancient podestàs, is not just architectural beauty; it houses an even greater treasure for lovers of history and archaeology: the Museo Archeologico «Giovannangelo Camporeale».
This museum is a true invitation to explore the deep roots of Tuscany, to connect with the land and with those who walked it before us. It has so many stories to whisper to us!
The museum, as we know it today, is the result of a long evolution. Born in 1867 as a modest civic museum, it moved several times before settling permanently in the Palazzo del Podestà in the 1970s. Its current name pays tribute to Giovannangelo Camporeale, a professor of Etruscology at the University of Florence. Her passion and determination were crucial.
In the 1980s, Camporeale launched major excavation campaigns on the shores of the Lake of Accesa, revealing an Etruscan settlement of great importance. Thanks to her hard work, and to the regional event «L'Anno degli Etruschi» in 1985, Massa Marittima was thrust into the archaeological spotlight, culminating in the official inauguration of the archaeological museum in 1993.
The museum is organized chronologically, offering a true journey through time. From the ground floor, you will be immersed in the prehistory of the territory. The Massa Marittima region is incredibly rich in caves and prehistoric remains, and the museum presents an impressive collection of them. Don't miss the fascinating Stele of Vado all'Arancio dating from the Neolithic period (3rd millennium BC) or the fossil cast of the’Oreopithecus bambolii, a hominid whose remains were discovered in the lignite mines of Montebamboli, right next door! It is a window onto a distant past, long before the arrival of the Etruscans.
The first floor is entirely dedicated to the Etruscan period, and it is there that Camporeale's legacy takes on its full meaning. You will discover the many finds from the village and necropolis of Lake Accesa. These objects testify to the ingenuity and wealth of the Etruscan civilization, particularly linked to the exploitation of the surrounding metal deposits. This land, once called Etruria, was the beating heart of an advanced society, based on trade and the extraction of silver, copper, pyrite or zinc. It is a true lesson in economic and social history that this museum offers us! To explore this topic further, feel free to check out our complete tour of Etruscan sites in Tuscany.
The «Giovannangelo Camporeale» Archaeological Museum is located on the magnificent Piazza Garibaldi, 2, 58024 Massa Marittima (GR). It is the ideal place to start your exploration of the town.
The museum is very accessible, located in the heart of the city. The facilities are designed to welcome a wide audience, which is always appreciated in Tuscany!
After your visit to the museum, I warmly invite you to follow in the footsteps of the Etruscans and head to Lake of Accesa. A marked trail starts from Massa Marittima and will lead you to this enchanting small basin, where you can explore the Archaeological Park. It is a magical experience to see the very site from which so many objects displayed in the museum come. History comes alive amid the lush nature of the Colline Metallifere. You can even discover the remains of the ancient Serrabottini mine shafts, exploited since Etruscan times!
The Archaeological Museum of Massa Marittima is much more than a simple collection of ancient objects. It is an open door onto the most authentic and deepest Tuscany, the one that forged its identity through working the land and its underground riches. A must-see for anyone seeking to understand the soul of this region, far off the beaten track.
