For the Argentario trails, take low hiking boots or trail shoes with a really grippy sole, with covered toes. Many routes go through the Mediterranean scrub, with climbs, descents and rocky sections: smooth city sneakers slip more easily, especially on stone. High-cut shoes are not essential for a classic walk, but they can be more comfortable if you prefer to keep your ankle supported or if you carry a heavy pack.
To go down to Cala del Gesso, really choose a pair that holds well on your foot: the access is steep and includes rocky sections. Avoid flip-flops and open sandals for the trail; keep them for the beach instead, and plan to change shoes if you want to swim. After rain, or when the ground is dusty and dry, grip matters even more. If you have only planned a short easy walk on a regular path, walking sneakers in good condition may be enough, but they do not replace a hiking sole on the accesses to the coves. Also check the route you have chosen before setting off: the network includes trails of different levels.
